About Al Khail Metro Station

Al Khail Metro Station (R35) is a Red Line station on Sheikh Zayed Road in Al Sufouh, serving the Dubai Knowledge Park free zone cluster and the media and tech campuses of the surrounding district. The station is in Nol Zone 2, making the Silver Nol Card fare AED 5.00 for most journeys from here into the city centre. It sits between Dubai Internet City (R34) to the east and Sobha Realty (R36) to the west on the elevated Red Line viaduct.

Al Khail Metro Station opened in September 2009 as part of the original Dubai Metro Red Line launch. The station takes its name from Al Khail Road, the major highway that runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road through this part of Dubai. The surrounding district hosts one of the city's densest concentrations of universities and higher education institutions — Knowledge Park alone accommodates branches of University of Wollongong, Middlesex University, London Business School, and more than a dozen other institutions in a single free zone campus.

The immediate surroundings are shaped by the knowledge and media economy. Dubai Media City to the north-east houses broadcasters, publishers, PR firms and advertising agencies. Barsha Heights (formerly TECOM), accessible by RTA feeder bus, is a residential and hotel district about 1.5 kilometres away with a large number of mid-range hotels popular with business travellers. The Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai Media City is approximately 500 metres from the station entrance.

From Al Khail Metro Station, Dubai Internet City is 2 minutes east, DMCC (Jumeirah Lakes Towers) is about 8 minutes west, Mall of the Emirates is around 12 minutes toward Abu Dhabi, and Union Station (the major Red/Green Line interchange) is approximately 30 minutes east. The daily cap of AED 20 Silver means that frequent travellers making multiple Zone 2 trips in one day have their spending capped automatically.

Al Khail Metro Station is used primarily by students commuting to Knowledge Park, professionals working in Dubai Media City and the adjacent free zones, and hotel guests in Barsha Heights using the metro to reach Downtown or the airport. Bus routes F28 and F29 from the station provide feeder connections into Knowledge Park's internal campus roads and toward Barsha Heights. The Zone 2 Silver Nol Card fare is AED 5.00; the daily cap is AED 20.

About Knowledge Park — Al Khail Metro Station Area

Dubai Knowledge Park is a purpose-built free zone campus that opened in 2003 as a hub for higher education and training. Over a dozen international university branches operate permanent campuses here, serving tens of thousands of students from across the UAE and the region. The campus layout is compact and walkable — most university buildings are within a 5-10 minute walk from the Al Khail Metro Station exit, making the station the primary commute option for Knowledge Park students.

Adjacent to Knowledge Park, Dubai Media City occupies a larger campus to the north-east with several dozen media companies, broadcasters and digital businesses. The Radisson Blu and a handful of other hotels cluster at the Media City end of the area, primarily serving business travellers on short stays. Barsha Heights, a kilometre inland, has a significantly larger concentration of residential towers, budget-to-mid hotels, restaurants and evening venues — accessible by feeder bus F28 or F29 from the station.

The practical rhythm of the station mirrors the academic year — boarding queues are heaviest during morning arrivals (08:30–10:00) and late afternoon departures (16:00–19:00) on weekdays during university terms. Outside term time and on weekends, the station is relatively uncrowded. The Zone 2 fare of AED 5.00 Silver applies on most Red Line journeys from here; for Jumeirah Lakes Towers or Marina, a single hop toward Abu Dhabi direction takes under 10 minutes.
