Knowing how to use Dubai Metro is the single best travel hack for visitors to the city. Clean, air-conditioned, and affordable, it covers every major tourist attraction — from Dubai International Airport to Burj Khalifa and the Marina. Dubai metro tickets start from AED 3.00, and dubai metro prices are capped daily, making it far cheaper than taxis. Here is the complete dubai metro tourist guide for 2026.

Getting from Dubai Airport to the City

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is served by two metro stations directly inside the terminal buildings:

  • Airport Terminal 3 (R13) — Connected to Terminal 3 via an air-conditioned walkway. This is where most international flights arrive. Jump on the Red Line here and you reach Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall in about 20 minutes.
  • Airport Terminal 1 (R14) — One stop further along the Red Line, serving Terminal 1 and the Garhoud area.
Airport surcharge: An extra AED 5.00 is added to every journey that starts or ends at either airport station. This is automatic — just make sure you have at least AED 12.50 on your Nol card before tapping in from the airport.

Understanding the Two Main Lines

For tourists, you will mostly use two lines:

Red Line — The backbone of the network. Runs east–west through the heart of the city, from the airport through Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa), Business Bay, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai Marina and out to Expo City. This single line covers the majority of tourist attractions.

Green Line — A loop that runs through Deira (old Dubai), crossing under the Creek and connecting through Bur Dubai. If you want to explore the traditional market areas, the historic Creek district or BurJuman, this is your line. Change between the two lines at Union Station or BurJuman Station.

Operating Hours

The Dubai Metro runs every day of the week, but Friday hours are different — reflecting the Islamic weekend:

  • Monday – Thursday & Saturday – Sunday: 05:00 – 00:00 (midnight)
  • Friday: 10:00 – 01:00 (1am next day)

Trains run every 3–7 minutes during peak hours and every 7–10 minutes off-peak. You rarely wait more than 10 minutes.

10 Tips for First-Time Riders

💳
Get a Silver Nol Card first Buy one from a vending machine at any station. Do not rely on single-use red tickets if you plan more than 2 journeys.
👔
Dress modestly Dubai has a conservative dress code on public transport. Shoulders and knees should be covered.
🚫
No eating or drinking Food and drinks (including water) are not permitted inside metro stations or on trains. Fines apply.
👩
Women & Children carriage The first carriage of every train is reserved for women and children. Men are not permitted to enter.
🗓️
Avoid peak hours Trains are crowded 7:30–9:30am and 5:00–7:30pm on weekdays. Travel outside these windows for a more comfortable ride.
📱
Download the RTA app Use it to plan journeys, check fares, top up your Nol card and get real-time departure info.
🌡️
Stations are heavily air-conditioned Bring a light layer — the contrast between outdoor heat and metro AC can be extreme, especially in summer.
🔇
Keep noise down Phone calls and loud music are frowned upon. Use headphones and keep your voice low.

Is the Metro Enough to See Dubai?

For most tourist highlights, yes — with one caveat. The metro gets you to the area, but some attractions are a short taxi or walk from the nearest station. Dubai Marina beach, for example, is about 15 minutes on foot from DMCC station. Factor this in, or combine your metro journey with a short ride-share. Uber and Careem both work well in Dubai and are cheaper than metered taxis.

For areas the metro does not reach — Palm Jumeirah, La Mer, Kite Beach, and the historic Al Fahidi neighbourhood — a short taxi ride from the nearest station is the practical solution.
