The dubai metro nol card is your key to the entire RTA transit network — metro, buses, trams, water buses, and the Dubai Ferry. The minimum nol card balance for metro entry is AED 7.50 (Silver) or AED 14.00 (Gold). This guide covers all nol card types, how nol card recharge works, how to do a metro card balance check, and everything else you need before your first ride.

The Four Types of Nol Card

RTA issues four variants of the Nol card. Which one you need depends on how long you're staying and how often you'll travel.

Red Nol Ticket

Single-use paper ticket. Good for 1–2 trips. Available at every station vending machine. No registration required. Best for one-off journeys.

Silver Nol Card

Reloadable card for standard-class travel. Costs AED 25 (AED 19 credit + AED 6 card fee). Best for tourists staying several days or longer.

Gold Nol Card

Same as Silver but grants access to the Gold Class carriage — the first and last cars on each train. Fares are roughly 2× Silver fares.

Blue Nol Card

Personalised card for UAE residents. Linked to your Emirates ID. Required to access monthly passes and commuter concessions.

Quick pick for tourists: Get a Silver Nol Card from any metro station vending machine. It costs AED 25, works on all RTA transport, and you can top it up as you go. No registration needed.

Fare Zones Explained

The Dubai Metro is divided into three fare zones. Your fare depends on how many zones your journey passes through — not on the number of stops.

JourneySilver CardGold Card
1 zoneAED 3.00AED 6.00
2 zonesAED 5.00AED 10.00
3 zonesAED 7.50AED 15.00
Airport surcharge (T1 or T3)+AED 5.00+AED 5.00

The airport surcharge applies whenever your journey starts or ends at Airport Terminal 1 (R14) or Airport Terminal 3 (R13), on top of the regular zone fare.

Daily Fare Caps

One of the best features of the Nol system is the daily fare cap. Once your total spending in a single calendar day reaches the cap, all further journeys that day are free. This protects frequent travellers from overpaying.

Gold CardAED 36.00AED 700.00

Where to Buy a Nol Card

  • Station vending machines — at every Dubai Metro station, 24/7. Accept cash and bank cards.
  • RTA customer service counters — at major stations like Union, BurJuman, and Deira City Centre.
  • Carrefour and LuLu supermarkets — Silver cards are available at many large branches.

How to Top Up

You can add credit to your Nol card in several ways:

  1. Vending machines at any metro station — fastest option; accepts cash and cards.
  2. RTA app (iOS / Android) — top up via credit card and the balance updates within minutes.
  3. RTA website (rta.ae) — same as the app, requires card registration.
  4. Carrefour and other retailers — hand your card to the cashier and they add credit at the till.
Minimum top-up: AED 10. There is no maximum top-up limit, but the card balance cannot exceed AED 1,000.

Nol Card for Buses, Tram & Ferry

Your Nol card works across all RTA transport in Dubai — not just the metro. Tap in and out on the Dubai Tram (JBR area), RTA buses, Dubai Ferry, and water buses using the same card. Fares for buses are generally lower than metro fares for the same distance.

Children & Concessions

Children under 5 travel free. UAE Nationals, people of determination (disabilities), and senior citizens over 60 with a registered Blue Nol Card receive discounted or free travel. Check the RTA website for current concession terms.

What Happens If You Run Out of Credit?

The metro gates will not open if your balance is too low to complete a journey. Always top up before your balance drops below AED 7.50 (the maximum single-journey fare). If you're caught without enough credit, you'll need to top up before you can exit through the paid zone.
